How to estimate a realistic project budget.

Your construction estimate is just one piece. Add soft costs, fees, and a cushion.

There are 3 layers to proper budget estimating:

Project Square Footage

Use room size averages for how many bedrooms, baths, and living areas you’ll need. Not sure? Use our average sizing chart in the free guide below.

Construction Costs

Multiply your square footage by an average per-square-foot cost in your region. Make sure to account for your anticipated finish level.

Total Project Budget

Don’t forget architectural fees, soft costs (permits, fees, surveys) and a contingency of 10–15%. Our guide walks you through the full breakdown.
